Tempest Turner June 13th

Lainya Magaña and Space07 are pleased to present Tempest Turner, a collection of new work by Bay Area artist, Jesse Hazelip. Taken from the name of a WWII bomber plane, Tempest Turner provides commentary about a time when the world was enlightened to the limitless power of man’s destructive will and how the mistakes of the past seem to be ignored by the actions of the present. Painstaking illustrations meld WWII machinery, such as guns and planes, with buffalo and heron, contrastin g the delicate beauty of nature with the menacing power of man. Hazelip’s work is made contemporary through his use of variant forms of media: wheatpaste, silkscreen, and salvaged materials. These mediums speak to his experience as a graffiti artist and the political nature of his work. Tempest Turner will include an impressive array of large-scale works as well as smaller, framed pieces. Featured work will include ink on paper, mixed media on found wood, limited edition silkscreen prints, and acrylic on wood.

So i got into it.....

The whole thing was coming down perfectly

Little did the evil buffers know, but they were creating a stencil with their own paint. Thanks buffers!!!

The Warhol party was crazy, I've never had my photograph taken so many times, not to mention that I was simultaneously trying to teach myself how to print on over sized canvas without a registration system. Dork talk aside, I really enjoyed myself, and I'm looking forward to seeing the work at the De Young. Many thanks to all who helped, and special thanks to Sarah and Terry at the East Bay Express for hooking the whole thing up and working really hard for us!

Miami Art Basel!!!!

We went to Miami to check out Art Basel (www.artbasel.com). It was the most inspiring trip that I have taken, filled with surprises and disappointment with the art world. But even the disappointments were fuel that I feel will help me in my work, help push me to fight the ugly side of this complicated and divisive thing we call art. I was surprised to see companies like Nike and Scion having a large presence at an Art event. The auto industry has invaded my cherished love, and no one seems to be noticing. The sad thing is that in these desperate times, artists need anything that we can get to stay afloat, be it Scion, Nike or any other willing donor. Regardless of who sponsored Art Basel, it was an amazing event, and I highly recommend every artist, art enthusiast, curator and human to go to this event and support the arts.
